5 Reasons You Should Regularly Exercise
Almost every diet plan includes some type of exercise to lose weight. However, aside from weight loss, exercising regularly benefits the entire body. From the ability to carry more groceries in at the same time to being able to keep up with active children, exercise has a multitude of healthful benefits.
1. Increases Strength
Strength training is an important part of exercising that many people skip out in favor of cardiovascular exercise. Strength training through weight lifting and weight-bearing exercises can improve posture, improve muscular ability for everyday tasks, raise the base metabolic rate and improve blood sugar levels. Weight lifting can strengthen bones, which can help women to prevent osteoporosis. Unfortunately, many women choose not to lift weights because of fear of “bulking up.” Women don’t make enough testosterone naturally to build muscles like men, so women shouldn’t feel afraid to lift weights regularly.
2. Improves Balance
Each year, over two million people visit the emergency room due to an injury from falling. Good balance can help to prevent falls from occurring. This is especially helpful for older adults who can risk serious injury from falling. Walking, exercising on one foot and lifting one leg at a time during exercise routines can all improve balance.
3. Increases Flexibility
Stretching before, during and after exercising can improve flexibility. Flexibility has a variety of benefits, which include:
- Improved posture
- Reduced back pain
- Realignment of soft tissues in back
- Increases physical performance
- Reduces risk of injury
- Eliminates shortening of muscles due to repeated exercise
- Improves blood flow
- Decreases soreness after working out
Fluid stretches should be done before exercising and static stretches should be done afterward. Never perform static stretches before a workout, as this can loosen ligaments and cause injuries to occur.
4. Aids in Weight Loss
Though the majority of weight loss comes from healthy dietary changes, regular exercise can help people lose weight more quickly. Exercise burns calories, which makes the body use excess fat for energy. Additionally, muscles burn more calories than fat. The more muscles that are built through regular exercise, the more calories a person can burn per day. Because exercise can also decrease blood sugar levels, the need for insulin is also reduced. Studies show that insulin causes the body to store excess fat. Keeping blood sugar levels stable can help people lose weight more efficiently.
5. Increases Endurance
Whether it’s chasing after children on a school playground or walking up flights of stairs to do laundry, endurance is necessary in order to perform work, life and family tasks. Regular exercise increases endurance, allowing people to have more energy and stamina to work and have fun.
Beginning an exercise routine can be a difficult challenge. Starting small with just exercising for 10 minutes three times a day can reap a multitude of healthful benefits. Finding an exercise that is enjoyed, such as jogging, walking, playing tennis, swimming or taking an aerobics class, will make it something to look forward to and not something to dread.
