Scientists and doctors are debating the specific causes of MS. However, most medical professionals agree that several internal and external factors can trigger a multiple sclerosis diagnoses.

Geography

If you live far away from the equator, you are more likely to be diagnosed with MS. In areas close to the equator, only a small percentage of the population has MS. In northern parts of the United States, 80 out of 100,000 residents have MS. A few studies have found that moving close to the equator before the age of 15 can lower the odds of developing MS.

Genetics

Scientists believe that there is a genetic component to MS. If your parent or sibling has MS, you are more likely to be diagnosed with the condition. People who have MS are more likely to react to changes in their environment. The reaction can trigger an autoimmune response.

Microbes

Scientists also speculate that microbes in the gut can affect the immune system. In one study, researchers noted that a lack of vitamin D can increase the risk of developing MS. Scientists are currently designing preliminary clinical trials that will modulate the gut microbiota.

Smoking

Several studies have proven that smokers have a higher risk of developing MS. Smokers are likely to have a rapid progression of MS. Fortunately, studies have also suggested that smokers slow the progression of MS when they quit smoking.

Stress

Stress can wreck havoc on your immune system, and prolonged stress can trigger new MS symptoms. According to one study, patients who reduced their stress level had fewer lesions on an MRI scan. Researchers concluded that stress reduction can be an effective treatment.

If you have been diagnosed with MS, there are several things that you can do to manage the disease. You should eat more produce. You do not have to become a vegan, but you should eat the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables. Most doctors agree that you should avoid fatty foods. When you stick to a healthy eating regime, you can occasionally reward yourself with a sweet or salty treat.
